On the way to Gonaives we had two flat tires. While our driver hitched a ride into Gonaives to get the second tire fixed, we had a long wait over two hours. Out in the country with no houses in sight, we heard voices of children a few hundred yards away behind some trees. We walked to the little compound of about six little houses to visit. The children ran away screaming in fright when they saw us. Their grandmother came out and greeted us. She explained that these children had not seen 'white' people before. They soon were coaxed to come out and meet us. Before we knew it they were playing the 'rock' game with Kez, a nurse that went with us. After the rock game these children entertained us with song and dance. The grandmother told us that their whole compound was flooded with water up to the roofs. They put all the children up on the tin roofs and the adults hung on to the sides of the building. All their food, clothing and livestock were washed away. We gave them bags of food and and each one got a 'tablet', that is a type of cookie made with peanuts, ginger and some other ingredients not identifiable. They were so grateful for our visit and our gifts. I will post a photo of all the children in a few days. They desperately need food and clothing. Hopefully, we can make another trip to Gonaives in the near future and drop off some clothing for the children.
