A week ago Saturday, there was a ping pong tournament held at QCS at the last moment. The arrangements were made the day before. It was all set up outside on the basketball court, but the canopies to protect the players from the sunshine were not the right size - too small :-( Two of the four tables were brought into the chapel after all the benches were removed and the tournament was played there. These 12 'select' players were good, very good. Impressive quality of play.
This past Friday, the first basketball games of an outside leageue were played on the school's basketball court. The playing field of the league was partially destroyed with the tropical storms and so their equipment was moved to our basketball court withinn the span of six weeks. This league plays on Friday afternoons and Saturday afternoons. The school has a most excellent basketball court in the agreement between the school and the league. It is great that the school can share its facilities with the community and in this way, make God's light shine.
The previous picture shows the bleachers on one side of the court while you can see the bleachers at the end of the court were not filled. That will change over time and there could be more than 500 people watching the games on a Friday night. The court also has lights so the games can continue after it gets dark. It starts to get dark here by 5pm now. The court is made from plastic tiles and yes, there is even a scoreboard in the background. The game was just underway.
Friday I took a break from the regular daily geometry lesson and let the students play with geometric shape - the tangram pieces. it was an interesting class period trying to configure the 7 pieces back to the original square after all the puzzle pieces were cut out. They enjoyed the the change of pace. How many squares can you create by using some or all of the tangram pieces?
After the introduction to the tangram, the students went at it recording the various shapes they recreated as shown on the white board. The class was a buzz with activity try the various shapes and asking me also if I could make the shapes asked for:-) I had brushed up a little for the class and therefore surprised those who asked for help. Soon I will be reviewing the various chapters in prepartion of the Christmas exams, which are three weeks away. I have 29 students in this geometry class.
